DELICIOUS VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN FOOD IN THE HEART OF MID-WALES

Tŷ Medi is a vegetarian and vegan café set in the small, historic market town of Machynlleth. We are nestled in the beautiful Dyfi valley, between the Cambrian Mountains and the foothills of south Snowdonia and close to the sandy beaches of Ynys Las and Aberdyfi.

Our family took over the café in Spring 2019, when the long-time owners of the famous Quarry Café moved on to new things.

Having grown up in nearby Llanbrynmair, the Quarry was always one of the best places to eat in Machynlleth and we have fond memories of both its community atmosphere and the food.

So, when an acquaintance mentioned the Quarry Café was up for sale, our family was instantly intrigued. We knew we had the right blend of cookery, baking, and management skills to run a successful cafe. Emma is a professionally trained and talented head chef. Our mum is an accomplished baker whose talents are much-sought-after for wedding and birthday cakes. Becky was a local teacher ready to broaden her horizons.

But still, the idea of stepping into the gap left by such a well-loved local institution was daunting!

Our beloved late sister and daughter, Louise, had always had a dream of creating a venture here in mid Wales. She saw potential everywhere she looked – farms, pubs, boats, buildings.

In one memorable family conversation, she suggested our family buy a building and create and run a unique café together. We knew that this café was exactly the kind of space Louise had envisaged.

By taking the plunge, we could actualise Louise’s dream to create a cosy, welcoming café offering delicious food and cakes. We could also honour our happy family memories of this space and continue the café’s tradition of serving tasty vegetarian food to the community.

We started serving early summer 2019. When we closed for Christmas we committed to a full renovation and expanding the café, although global events meant reopening took a little longer than we’d hoped!

Our vision for the future includes opening for evening meals and specials events. We’re excited to explore vegetarian and vegan food from around the world, host musical performances, cinema nights, and functions such as yoga workshops.

As part of the renovations, we also expanded our kitchen facilities, streamlined meal creation, and opened up our kitchen so you can watch the team’s awesomeness unfold in real time!

Our team of talented chefs draw upon their diverse skills, specialities, and culinary backgrounds to create a fresh selection of delectable, innovative dishes and flavour combinations daily.

A larger kitchen also means Mum, our head baker, has been able to experiment and expand her repertoire of delicious treats. She’s affectionately known to many as the “Queen of Vegan Cakes”.

We have been so lucky to expand the Tŷ Medi family, with a terrific team of dedicated, energetic, and bilingual staff working alongside us from the beginning. Together, we endeavour to provide a dining experience that makes Tŷ Medi the go-to spot in Machynlleth for breakfast, lunch, coffee and yummy cakes.

We are so very grateful for the tremendous support from our community, dedicated staff, and loyal customers. We look forward to welcoming familiar locals, seasonal holiday makers, and visitors from all over. We want our customers to remember us as fondly as we remember The Quarry Café all those years ago.

If you’d like to make a booking or hold an event at our café, please get in touch or speak to one of the team when you next visit.
